Ivan Krastev talks about the flaws and ideals of Democracy and goes into whether or not we can have democracy without trust. This truly raised some questions and furthermore begs the question, where did we mess up so badly that we cannot trust our own government? With the instilling of technology, and the wealth of knowledge and information becoming easier to come across, the demand for more transparency with government rises as well. We the people believe that we have a right to know, as we live in a democratic society. With this, if the government acts in clandestine, then one can ask if it's truly American. One of our major ideals is the idea of freedom and choice. When you come to America, the first thing you're told is that this is the land of the free, free to choose a path, and free to take information. When our democratic government impedes on that, it can be argued this is strictly unamerican.
Looking in that same direction, control, opaqueness, and a lack of information is paramount to a dictatorship, communist, or a tyrannical government. These are ideals Americans have stoutly rejected and find to be unholy to this culture of freedom. Once more, this begs the question, is a lack of transparency a signature flaw of democracy, or perhaps even truly unamerican.
